The IMAT syllabus.

The IMAT tests 60 questions across 6 subjects, and the ministry publishes exactly what may be asked. Below is that programme in full — all 126 topics, grouped into the 33 areas the official document uses, with the question count for every section. Nothing here is our interpretation of the syllabus; it is the syllabus. The same topics are the courses, the practice questions and the mocks.

Where the marks are

How the 60 questions are split.

IMAT sections with question counts and number of syllabus topics
Section Questions Share Topics
Reading skills and knowledge acquired in studies 4 7% 7
Logical reasoning and problems 5 8% 7
Biology 23 38% 39
Chemistry 15 25% 30
Mathematics + Physics 13 22% 43
Total 60 100% 126

Biology alone is worth more than a third of the paper, and chemistry and biology together are worth 38 of 60 questions. Maths and physics share a single section, so the split between them varies by year — expect roughly 7 maths and 6 physics questions.

Marking has recently been +1.5 for a correct answer, −0.4 for a wrong one and 0 for a blank — which changes when guessing is worth it. We worked the maths out here. Confirm the figures for your own exam year against the official sources at the bottom of this page.

Where this comes from

One source, named.

This page renders the ministry's own programme — Allegato A — Programmi relativi ai quesiti delle prove di ammissione ai corsi di laurea magistrale in Medicina e Chirurgia (LM-41), Odontoiatria e Protesi Dentaria (LM-46) e Medicina veterinaria (LM-42) in lingua inglese, published by the Ministero dell'Università e della Ricerca. We hold it as structured data (version 2025.1, retrieved 2026-08-18) rather than as copied prose, which is why the counts on this page are exact rather than approximate.

The English topic names are our renderings of the official Italian. Where the ministry's wording is short enough to be useful, it appears under Official wording inside each area, so you can check our reading against the original.

The syllabus is republished with each admission decree and can change between cycles. Before you plan a year of study around it, verify the current version at the source — and if you find a difference from what is shown here, tell us and we will correct it.
